I was a little hesitant at first to buy this router. I typically love an Asus UI, especially with a Merlin firmware.

As my primary need was for a VPN client this newly launched router seemed to have everything needed to make it a super fast capable router when being used with a AES 256bit CBC encrypted data signal. Well it turns out that this router with its super fast optimised dual core CPU is certainly up to the task.

With its ease of setup, using the Merlin firmware, as a VPN client, it is very simple to apply policy based routing. Having devices running through the WAN or the tunnel of the VPN connection, wit ha kill switch, is very easy. As is port forwarding.

Using a smart connection for the excellent Wi-Fi, to combine both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz into one SSID, and then the router allocates the appropriate band to each device, is also both easy to setup and very effective.

There is much more to this router but the little that I have touched on went to convince me that it is a very impressive buy for our needs.

I never did like using DD-WRT or a pf sense box, my brain is far too feeble to cope or manage with those.

So far I am very very happy with the excellent throughput of this router and its massive list of features.

Merlin described it as being .....

So basically, expect around 200 Mbps of throughput (I doubt the GT-AC5300's extra cores will make any real difference, OpenVPN being single threaded). That's about 4x faster than the RT-AC68U, and probably around 3x faster than the RT-AC88U/RT-AC3100/RT-AC5300.

and someone noted with their fast VPN connection.....

Based on those results I added only the rcv buffers as the snd buffers lowered the upload speeds.
DL: 223 Mbps
UL: 233 Mbps

The single highest values: DL: 228 Mbps UL: 262 Mbps

Excellent router so far.

Great bit of kit.
I'm on a fibre to the home connection so wanted something to give me good ac wifi coverage through the whole house. This doesn't disappoint. The furthest distance room to the router (through walls and upstairs) line of sight would be around 25m (in lucky in the fact my fibre point is centeral in my house and under the stairs). In this room I get 3 bars on iPhone and circa 200Mbps - on the AC wifi. On the 2.4ghz radio in the same room I get around 90Mbps.

When on the same floor in the house as the router I get full speed over AC (330Mbps).

I use the merlin firmware build which is very stable and secure.

Best, fastest, gaming, business router money can buy.

The wireless and strength on this router is incredible both for 2.4ghz and 5ghz incredible. This has 1 band 2,4ghz and 2 x 5ghz bands for hardware and software features this cannot be matched. Also supports link aggregation combining port 1 and 2 as one super fast connection I have 2 network nas setup on this through a managed switch a qnap and netgear Nas for blistering fast 4k streaming and photo editing this is blazing fast.

Gaming this is incredible have an Xbox one and Xbox one x connected with no impact on speed or impact on gaming. Also have multiple iPads, smart TVs and htpc along with phones no impact on speed any were.

If you want the fastest, most reliable router that can handle a shed load of devices the look no further. I have have 350 meg broadband and get 320 - 350 meg wirelessly over AC any were in the house incredible performance my router is on 24hrs a day.

I’ve had several Asus routers and never let me down also use a lot of Asus pc components over the years again never let me down can’t say that about any other brand.

If you pay the money for the fastest broadband for gaming and streaming then don’t stick a cheap router on your connection and expect it to perform the router is the most important component that everything else will connect too pay the money you won’t regret it And is will last and future proof you long term. With routers like this you only need to upgrade every 5 to 7 years if at all.

Bought this to replace an AC68U knowing it would give vastly improved VPN performance on my 200mb connection. The AC68U does about 35-40mb at best, the AC86U will max out my connection with room to spare as the processor is much better at handling VPN's AES encryption. I use Merlin firmware on it so I can set specific devices to use the VPN while leaving others to bypass it (for things like Netflix). Can't fault it.

Very pleased with this router, it has boosted network speeds/responsiveness and that is compared with replacing a reasonably fast/modern router, so the difference between this router and a cheaper/older router could impress even more.
My previous router was also an Asus of about 3 yrs old, it performed well, but on moving to a larger house, the Wi-Fi was not as I wished and my daughter’s bedroom was a problem for reception, being diagonally opposite (top left rear of house) to the room with the router (bottom right front of house), so I anticipated an issue.
I looked into the Mesh whole of house Wi-Fi systems, but nothing tempted me in terms of cost or performance, so I did not do anything prior to the house move. After moving last month, it was evident that I needed to tackle the Wi-Fi issue, thankfully at that time a firmware update to my existing router added the AI-Mesh function, so I could add a second Asus router and create my own Mesh whole of house Wi-Fi for less money.
I purchased this router and setup was easy and I was able to use both routers in the new AI-Mesh feature. Speeds are very good, my daughter gets the same download speed on Wi-Fi in her bedroom that we get via an Ethernet cable (75MB/Sec), which is an impressive result that I had hoped for, but not expected. Not all older Asus routers support this Mesh system, so do as I did, do your research to ensure compatibility.

Bought this for the 8 Gigabit LAN Ports only reason i ruled out other routers .. i am using Virgin Media Super Hub 3 and put this into modem mode connected ASUS Router and set up was quite easy ... connected all my devices including echo dots smart plugs and mobile phones ...LAN cables to my tv and my WD CLOUD with all my media on there .. few days went past and found that my WD CLOUD running plex was losing connection every few hours.. have had problems before but not like this my cloud was connected with LAN to the asus router which then had lan straight to tv.. thought it might be a one off until watching a film from cloud froze ..goes onto PC no connection ..PC is also connection by LAN to ASUS router.. Ok i went to go into the router from my PC using IP address nothing... tried rebooting everything from virgin hub to ASUS router still no look ... thinking my 200mb virgin speed had gone down i tried putting my virgin super hub back to router setting and it was working fine ... i could not access the ASUS router after all the reboots from ip address.. as was not going to factory reset and spend all the time again renaming my devices .. sent back ....nothing was good on this router apart from the 8 LAN Ports

This review is for the Asus RT-AC86U. It’s very hard know which review is for what model here as Amazon appear to have lumped many other model’s reviews together.

I saved down my configuration from my old RT-AC68 (inc DDNS account) and set up the 86U, installed new Merlin firmware and then uploaded settings saved from 68U (isp login, IPTV settings, and Wi-fi settings. Static IPs had to be manually input). Rebooted and everything worked perfectly.

WiFi coverage is significantly improved. We have a Squeezebox radio down in our yard some 65ish feet away from the router (2 internal brick walls, a garden followed by another brick wall to get through) and reported 2.4Ghz strength has gone from ~30% to ~40%. Strength throughout the house (medium sized) is excellent on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. Lots of wired clients too (two switches connected) and no issues as expected.

Very happy so far. I will update my review should this change.

Easy setup, great improvement in speed and coverage on what I had previously, and a nice secure router.

This is a very expensive Router, however after installing it I have seen my wifi speed increase dramatically. After long consideration and review I selected this router and I’m not disappointed after getting over the shudder of spending almost £300 on a router for home.

It gives much more control, I can see all traffic going through my network, control individual devices and do all the things I wanted my previous Draytek router, however it is 10 times easier to use, and significantly faster.

The security features are good and to a high standard with a degree of parental control, doesn't replace the granular control I like, however I cover this off with Open DNS and us my own DNS Server which fills the Gaps.

If you are buying this don’t forget (as I did) it is a Router only, therefore there is no ADSL+ Modem built in. This is good as if I switch to Fibre in the future I can still use this router. I complemented it with a TP-LINK TD-8817 ADSL2+ Modem which I setup as a Bridge to connect this router to my ADSL line.

I recently upgraded to the Virgin super hub 3.0, and to be honest, the WiFi on it is terrible. I decided to buy this router to replace the Hubs WiFi, and it was very easy to set up. I have never had faster internet speed before, even over WiFi, I've reached speeds of almost 400Mbps. This product is definitely worth the £200 price tag. The software is easy to use and you can do everything you need to with it, it even comes with its own protection, which does have a slight performance impact on the 2.4GHz network, but not the 5GHz. Overall I highly recommend this router if you want an extremely fast internet connection for all your devices.

I am not a gamer but I needed a fast and powerful router with excellent coverage. I have on average about 15 devices connected + guests and my previous router (ASUS87U) was struggling a bit. The AC5300 is amazing: the range is better than using two routers with one configured as an access point! It is easy to set up and has a very large number of options. Yes, it is very expensive but it genuinely is faster, so it is worth the price. The more powerful chip inside in particular speeds things up even when the measured speed of traffic remains about the same.
